There's Something About: Kids Camp

It's been a few weeks, ok maybe a few months, but I wanted to blog about Tink going to kids camp with a group of kids from our church. It was a 5-day sleep-away camp several hours away! Did you get that? 5 DAYS!! She has been waiting to be old enough to go for several years now. And every kid going was a first-timer this year. There were some nervous mommies at drop off that Monday morning.

As the week got closer and closer, I was sure I was fine with her going. We got everything she needed and she was all packed and ready to go. She was soooo excited! And at 6:30 Monday morning, she was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and ready to go.

But for some reason, I could not sleep at all Sunday night. Or Monday night. Or even Tuesday night. I think some time Wednesday it finally occurred to me that even if I didn't feel like I was worried, I guess my subconscious was. How else do you explain 3 sleepless nights in a row? But by Thursday night, I slept just fine - probably because she was due home on Friday, duh.

Tink had a GREAT time. There were different themes each day, they could decorate their cabins, and dress up according to the themes. I gave her two disposal cameras to take pictures, which she loves to do. After we developed the photos, I discovered that easily two-thirds of the pictures were of the beautiful Pennsylvania landscape on her way to the camp. But there were definitely a few photos of her friends and cabin.

Her favorite thing to do was fishing. She said she caught 5 fish (more than anyone else that day). For weeks after she got home, she asked us almost daily to take her fishing, which she never really seemed to enjoy that much in the past. (No, we never took her fishing after camp. Maybe next summer.)

I know it's hard to see, but there is a fish at the end of that line. And look how happy she is!

I'm glad she enjoyed herself, but I've definitely been ok with her not having any other sleep-away camps or activities since then. Once a summer seems to be just fine.

There's Something About: First Blogaversary

October 15, 2012
My first blog post.

Ok, so, I don't know what I was thinking! Actually, I do. I was thinking that I wanted to share my life with not only my family and friends, but with other military families, too.

But whoa! I did not realize how HUGE "blogland" really is! And honestly, I think it was a little overwhelming at first. I wanted to read practically every blog I ever came across. And follow them all, and read them everyday, and reply to every post. Oh, but wait, I think I have kids and a hubby who might want Mommy off the computer at least to cook dinner or something. I still have to remind myself that there's life "away" from the computer.

I've really enjoyed blogging and everything that comes with it. (Sounds like I'm saying goodbye, but I'm not.) Just saying, I wish I had more time for blogging. But stick around, with all the stuff going on in our lives, I'm sure I'll be posting something more interesting soon enough!

So, happy 1st blogaversary to me! And I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have.

There's Something About: Government Shutdowns

I'm not sure where I'm going with this post. But since part of the reason I started blogging was to connect with other milspouses, I feel like I should say something - maybe. I'm just not sure what exactly. I don't like to get into the politics of these sorts of things, nor do I want to. But I also don't want to pretend it's not happening. So, here's what's happening for us.

The Major is home, not working, not getting paid, and trying to make the best of it. In fact, there are plenty of things needing to get done around the house and our rental property, that this time off is kind of a blessing in disguise.

Our first home here in NY; now a rental property.

He's patching walls, taking care of slow drains, cleaning the fish tank, and cleaning the basement. If this continues into next week, I might pick out a new paint color for our master bathroom!

Or maybe a complete bathroom renovation?

Since the Major is home, he's getting Tink and Lightning off the bus, so I've been able to work a couple of extra hours a day, which will help to supplement our income. It was nice to see a bigger paycheck than normal today!

The extra time at work is messing up my dinner routine. I have less time at home to prepare whatever I might have planned. I may need to come up with a better plan for next week.

In the meantime, we're doing our best to pinch pennies where we can. I took 2 bags of bottles and cans to be recycled last night. I usually wait till I have about 6 bags before I make that trip. And the Major said he put the truck on cruise control at 55MPH yesterday when he was running some errands. It's not much, but every little bit helps.

And what would really be helpful is if Congress can finally do their job so my husband can go back to work.
