There's Something About: My Fitness Story - Part II

If you haven't yet, you can read My Fitness Story - Part I here.

We were sitting at dinner one night and discussing what to do about our expanding waistlines. The Major had heard about a 90-day video workout program and thought we could do that together. I was excited about doing anything since he was ready to do it with me.

We started the last week of January 2009, and we took our before pics. I did not like those at all! Then we started working out. We worked out 6 days a week! And it was tough. We have 3 kids and are not morning people, so we would workout after the kids were in bed, which meant getting started after 8:30pm. And sometimes, not even starting till almost 10:00pm. But we were determined!

We also cut out carbs as much as possible and decided that there was no rule that said you had to have carbs or starches at every meal, especially dinner. We tried to remind ourselves that we "eat to live, not live to eat". I still tell myself this all the time! We also cut out soda. I mean, the hubs and I probably felt like we could survive on Dr. Pepper alone, but then we probably wouldn't survive for very long. So, I stopped buying soda.

It was great having a workout partner to help push ourselves along. If I didn't feel like getting started with a workout, the Major was there to insist we keep going, and vice versa. We even took the program with us on our trip to Disneyworld! We drove, so we were able to take the actual weights with us. We got up at 7:00am (did I mentioned we're not morning people?) and worked out before heading out to the parks for the day. We were committed!

We saw great results throughout the length of the program. I couldn't believe how strong I got! Then we moved on to a more extreme video workout program. Honestly, we never "finished" the extreme program, although I did get over halfway through it. But I continue to use the all the videos to vary my workout.

This is a year later in the same sweater as the photo in Part I.

Another year later, in March 2011, we bought an incline treadmill and I started running. My whole life I've hated running, but I wanted to do something at home, while watching my favorite shows. And maybe getting a little tired of watching videos. The Major had been wanting to get a treadmill, so I said as long as it fits in the living room, I'll use it. And I do!

I lost 23 lbs. and pretty much sustained that for about a year. I continued exercising and trying my best to eat right. I lost another 10 lbs., but it was difficult to maintain and I gained it back - I "mess up" all the time! But I remind myself that I'm not perfect and just move forward. I don't deprive myself of the things I love: ice cream, chocolate and Dr. Pepper. I do my best to only have them occasionally, though, so I try not to keep these things in the house. I have my treats when we go out.

I do different things to keep me going along the way, like make sure to spend plenty of time outside with the kids. At least it gets me out of the house and running around a little. We ride bikes and take walks with Rocky, too. I even tried a Facebook 5-day challenge and got a little motivation from "strangers/new friends"!

I do my best to keep moving. I try new workouts and occasionally change up my routine. I'm happy knowing that I do my best to be healthy, but I know I'm only human and stumble from time to time. Just keep moving - tomorrow is another day!

Coming soon - my adventures with Cross Fit!

  2. It makes such a huge difference having someone to work out with. That's why I was so happy to have my friend running with me. Everyone slips up as periodically... but it sounds like you have a system and it's really working for you! Congratulations!

  3. That is great! I have such a hard time with exercise. I always say I am going to do it and then dont. My goal in June is to start doing something, even if it is only for 3 days a week. Thanks for sharing and giving me motivation at Friday Follow Along Party.
